Center Valley, Pa. - Reigning Patriot League football co-champion Colgate has been tabbed by the Patriot League football head coaches and sports information directors to win its second-straight crown and make the program's third NCAA postseason appearance in four years, announced Tuesday at the 2006 Patriot League Football Media Day at Green Pond Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa.
In addition to the announcement of the Patriot League Football Preseason Poll, the Patriot League's Football Preseason Awards winners were also announced. Colgate's Geoff Bean (Oneonta, N.Y.) and Jordan Scott (Hyattsville, Md.) were named Patriot League Preseason Defensive and Offensive Players of the Year, respectively. Fordham's Micah Clukey (St. Augustine, Fla.) was tabbed the Patriot League's Preseason Special Teams Player of the Year.
The Raiders, which tied Lafayette for a share of the 2005 Patriot League football title, received eight first-place votes and 68 points overall. Colgate's five Patriot League championships is tied with Holy Cross and Lafayette for second all-time. The Raiders are two years removed from its NCAA Championship game appearance against Delaware in 2003.
Head Coach Dick Biddle, who enters his 10th season as the helm of the Raiders (second most in Patriot League history) is tied with Holy Cross' Mark Duffner (1986-91) for the most Patriot League crowns with five.
Two-time defending champion Lafayette placed seven votes behind Colgate with 61 overall and three first-place nods. The Patriot League's 2004 co-champion Lehigh rounded out the first-place votes with three, and 57 points overall.
Holy Cross (35), Fordham (33), Bucknell (27) and Georgetown (13) finished off the poll.
Bean, a senior and a two-time All-Patriot League selection (First-Team 2005, Second-Team 2006) averaged 5.7 tackles per game last year (42 solo, 68 overall).
Scott was the Patriot League's 2005 Freshman of the Year recipient and Second-Team All-Patriot League selection after rushing for a Patriot League leading 1,364 yards. His 11 touchdowns (10 rushing), led all freshman.
Clukey is a three-time All-Patriot League selection, earning First-Team accolades in 2004 and 2005 and receiving a Second-Team berth in 2003.
